The New York Yankees, dubbed the “Evil Empire” by haters and fans alike, seem to have already won the arms race this offseason with the expensive acquisitions of starting pitchers C.C. Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, and first baseman Mark Teixeira. But does that mean they are now a lock to win the World Series, or even the AL East? LONG ISLAND CITY, NY - Mets manager Jerry Manuel stood at the podium and in a classic photo opportunity helped his closer, Francisco Rodriguez, put on his new jersey. Players who will earn hundreds of millions of dollars over the next few years will put on their new caps, jerseys and answer a lot of questions. Much will be written about their answers, as these young men each represent the hopes and dreams of countless fans that want their team to be the last one standing in October. There’s no doubting the tremendous work Omar Minaya has done over the past week. He took the Mets biggest concern and in the blink of an eye transformed into a huge strength.
